1. The Origin of the Hell Doctrine: A Lie Introduced by Satan
The Bible shows clearly that the very first lie ever told to mankind was the idea that humans would not truly die.
“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die.” (Genesis 3:4, KJV)
Jesus identifies Satan as the author of this false doctrine:
“Ye are of your father the devil… When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44, KJV)
The doctrine of the immortal soul is simply a continuation of that first lie: that man does not really die.
2. The Penalty for Sin Is Death, Not Eternal Torment
God clearly stated that disobedience would bring death, not everlasting torture.
“For in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:17, KJV)
The apostle Paul confirms the same truth:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, KJV)
The Bible does not say the wages of sin is eternal torment, but death.
3. The Soul Is Mortal
Many religions claim that the soul is immortal. But Scripture teaches the opposite:
“The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:4, KJV)
“The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:20, KJV)
If the soul can die, then it is not immortal.
4. Death Is a State of Unconsciousness, Not Life in Hell
The Bible teaches that the dead are not conscious and feel nothing:
“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5, KJV)
“For there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10, KJV)
“For in death there is no remembrance of thee.” (Psalm 6:5, KJV)
If the dead know nothing and cannot remember God, they cannot be suffering in a place of torment.
5. Man Dies the Same as Animals
Scripture explains that humans do not possess a separate conscious existence after death:
“As the one dieth, so dieth the other… all go unto one place.” (Ecclesiastes 3:19–20, KJV)
“Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward?” (Ecclesiastes 3:21, KJV)
There is no proof of conscious life after death.
6. Man Ceases to Exist in Death
When a man dies, his thoughts and plans vanish:
“His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” (Psalm 146:4, KJV)
This contradicts the idea that man continues living in torment or bliss immediately after death.
7. Final Destruction, Not Eternal Torment
The Bible speaks of the wicked perishing, not being tortured forever:
“The way of the ungodly shall perish.” (Psalm 1:6, KJV)
“But the wicked shall perish… they shall consume away.” (Psalm 37:20, KJV)
God does not preserve sinners alive forever to torture them — He destroys them completely.
8. Hell Is Symbolic: Death and the Grave Will Be Destroyed
In Revelation, “hell” (the grave) is cast into the lake of fire:
“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” (Revelation 20:14, KJV)
If hell is destroyed, it cannot be a place of eternal torment.
Furthermore:
“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15, KJV)
This represents final destruction, not endless torture.
9. God Does Not Approve of Torture and Does Not Torment Men
One of the strongest proofs is that God condemns the burning of people:
“They have built the high places of Tophet… to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.” (Jeremiah 7:31, KJV)
“They have… burnt their sons with fire… which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind.” (Jeremiah 19:5, KJV)
How could God do eternally what He says never even entered His mind?
10. Purgatory Does Not Exist in the Bible
The Bible never mentions purgatory. Instead, it teaches that man dies and waits in the grave until the resurrection:
“Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake.” (Daniel 12:2, KJV)
The dead are asleep, not being purified in a place of temporary fire.
11. Eternal Life Is a Gift, Not a Natural Possession
Immortality is not something humans naturally have — it is a gift given only to the saved:
“The gift of God is eternal life.” (Romans 6:23, KJV)
Only God is described as immortal by nature:
“Who only hath immortality.” (1 Timothy 6:16, KJV)
General Conclusion
The Bible clearly teaches that:
- Hell as a place of eternal torment does not exist
- Purgatory is not a biblical teaching
- The soul is mortal
- Death is the penalty for sin
- God is loving and does not torture mankind
- The wicked will be destroyed forever, not tormented endlessly
