Free Will

Free Will and the Existence of God

1. Human observation

People perceive themselves as free agents:
they choose, decide, regret, and plan.

Daily experience assumes we could have acted differently.

2. The problem in a deterministic universe

If the universe is only matter governed by physical laws, then every action is the inevitable result of prior reactions.

The brain would function like a biological machine → we would not choose, but merely react.

3. The consequence

Without free will there is no:

  • responsibility
  • real guilt
  • merit
  • justice

Yet society and justice systems assume freedom of choice.

4. The biblical connection

Deuteronomy 30:19 — “I have set before you life and death… choose life.”

Human beings are presented as real moral agents.

Joshua 24:15 — “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

Personal responsibility.

5. Logical interpretation

If choices are real, then the mind is not completely determined by matter.

This suggests a non-material component of the person.

6. The link to God

A universe created by a free Mind explains the existence of beings capable of free choices.

Genesis 1:27 — man created in the image of God

Freedom derives from a personal Being, not from impersonal processes.

7. Conclusion

Materialistic determinism does not explain real moral responsibility.
Human experience affirms freedom of choice.
The Bible affirms humans are created in the image of a personal God.

Result:

The existence of free will points to a personal origin of reality — God.
