Ketef Hinnom is located near Jerusalem, above the Valley of Hinnom (Gehenna).
It was discovered in 1979 by archaeologist Gabriel Barkay.

πŸ“… Dating: approximately 650–600 BC
(period of the First Temple β€” before the Babylonian destruction)

Inside a burial chamber, two tiny rolled silver scrolls were found β€” worn as amulets.

After 3 years of microscopic unrolling, ancient Hebrew text appeared.

It is a version of the Priestly Blessing from the Bible.

Text of the inscription (translation)

YHWH bless you and keep you;
YHWH make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

Direct biblical parallel

Numbers 6:24–26:

β€œThe Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His face upon you and give you peace.”

➑️ The text is essentially identical β€” only shorter.

Importance of the discovery

  1. The oldest known biblical verse (about 400 years older than previously known manuscripts)
  2. The divine name YHWH appears clearly
  3. The Bible was not created late β€” it was already used in daily life
  4. People carried Scripture as personal protection

What it confirms historically

βœ” existence of biblical texts before the exile
βœ” stability of textual transmission
βœ” use of the name YHWH
βœ” personal faith, not only temple ritual

Conclusion

Ketef Hinnom shows that Scripture was already considered sacred centuries before the final compilation of the Bible.

We do not only have a late copy β€”
we have a fragment from the real biblical world.

This is one of the strongest pieces of evidence that the biblical text was faithfully transmitted from antiquity.
